Yeah, okay. I get it. It’s impossible to measure the value of human life and at face level, this was one life against twenty. How could one be worth more than twenty? It’s not. Of course it’s not. But, in the context of the new world that’s coming, a doctor, who can both sustain life and shepherd in new life, is probably a greater asset than twenty souls who are nearing their natural departure and who have exceeded their child-bearing years. And while it behooves me to call them a burden, the truth is, a new world depends on fresh blood and bodies capable of high contribution. There won’t be capacity to care for those who are no longer able to care for themselves.
Cruel? Yes. But the legacy of their sacrifice will live on in the lives sustained by the saving of the doctor.
Maybe this has convinced you that the dome isn’t a place where you want to meet the future. Maybe the selection process is too exclusive, too harsh, too brutal. Or maybe the pragmatic in you understands the necessity behind careful choices and devastating sacrifice. If your will to survive allows you to understand the dome’s need to save the doctor, you can answer one more question to determine your eligibility.
Be warned though—if you thought the trolley question was tough, maybe take a moment and prepare your heart. Because you’re not ready for this. I guarantee it.
Are you sure you’re ready?
