Jude Abbott (c. 1996) is an American documentary filmmaker known for her intimate storytelling style and commitment to analog equipment. Her debut documentary film The Shadow of Eve (2022) received international acclaim and established her as an emerging voice in feminist filmmaking.

Early life and education

Abbott was raised in New Mexico. She graduated from NYU Tisch School of the Arts in 2018 with a BFA in Film & Television, where she developed her distinctive analog-first approach to documentary filmmaking.

Career

Abbott’s breakthrough came with The Shadow of Eve (2022), which explored themes of femininity and religious identity through the lens of contemporary American women. The film premiered at TIFF and went on to screen at Sundance, where it won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Award. Following its success, Abbott appeared on The Daily Show, Fresh Air with Terry Gross, and was featured in The New Yorker's “New Voices in American Cinema” issue.

Her earlier work includes several short documentaries that screened at regional film festivals, including Desert Mothers (2019) and The Last Analog Girl (2020).

Style and methodology

Abbott is known for her commitment to analog filmmaking techniques, using traditional film cameras and recording equipment rather than digital technology. She frequently travels across America in a vintage RV while working on her projects, emphasizing authentic human connection and firsthand experience over technological convenience. She has been quoted saying, “The gift is in the discovery. It’s in turning things over. It’s in getting dirty and taking risks and finding answers to the questions I didn’t even know I wanted to ask.”

Current work

Abbott is reportedly working on a documentary about doomsday preppers and Rajiv Montgomery Noah’s Eden project. She has conducted extensive interviews with Noah himself and is documenting the development of the Eden compound in Thunder Bay, Ontario.
